So I haven’t done any intense Photoshop or Illustrator sessions, but I wanted to tell you that once I installed the 2GBs of RAM, the overall experience is dramatically better. The base 512MB of RAM is just not sufficient for running the more RAM hungry apps. I had Photoshop, Illustrator, Fireworks, and Dreamweaver up today amongst Entourage and a handful of Universal apps, the MacBook completely kept up with me and never felt like it was going to bog down.

The new MacBook is great. I happen to be writing this on my new black MacBook that I’ve had for about three weeks now. I opted for the black since it does feel more professional to me. Yes, it’s silly about the $150 premium for black. You’d think Apple could’ve thrown in something else to explain the cost and a better nod towards it being meant for the professional end. But as the Macworld editors have pointed out that this is a similar tactic to what they did with the U2 iPod. It is a price premium but Macworld also think it’s to help manage demand.

So it appears I was wrong with my original assessment that the iBooks would keep their name. But this was before I read the rumor that Apple’s intent was to consolidate the iBook and PowerBook 12″ line under the MacBook name. This makes a whole lot of sense and not only does away with two choices (12″ vs. 14″) in the iBook line, but eliminates having to choose between a 12″ iBook and a 12″ PowerBook. MacBook to land at last by May…
Apple has begun manufacturing its new MacBook and should have the laptop in consumer hands in the next 30-60 days, sources report. The MacBook is being built exclusively around a 13.3-inch widescreen display.”
Looks like I may have been completely wrong about Apple keeping the iBook moniker. But it does make sense for them to roll up the 12″ PowerBook with the two flavors of iBooks into one offering where you can select the processor (Solo or Duo) and not concern yourself with the screen size.
The one really exciting tidbit of this rumor is that the MacBook’s 13.3-inch widescreen display will have a 1280×720 WXGA resolution. That alone is enough for me to part with my venerable 12″ PowerBook.

Update: It appears that AppleInsider’s recent rumors corroborates the iBook rebranding:
