Are you starting to get excited about the new version of Photoshop shipping at the end of the month? If you’re just focused on the speed gains you’ve been dreaming of from it being Universal, well I’m here to tell you there’s a whole lot more. For instance, take the new Quick Selection feature. Here’s another new feature that got its start in Photoshop Elements but has been super-charged for Photoshop CS3. Couple this new tool with the new Refine Edge command and you’ve got another great selection/masking tool to add to your arsenal.
Check out Martin Evening great intro to using Photoshop CS3’s new Quick Selection tool together with the new Refine Edge feature. You won’t be disappointed.

Smart Filters - Finally we get non-destructive filters (well, sort of). Smart Filters build off of Smart Objects introduced in CS2. In order to use Smart Filters, a layer must be converted to a smart object first. Yes, a little clunky, but the team has made every effort to make it as seamless as possible. Choose “Convert to Smart Filters” from the Filter menu in order to have Photoshop CS3 automatically convert a layer to a smart object before apply a selected filter. I’m not completely convinced at how successful this feature will be consider how Smart Objects exhibit strange blending behaviors in CS2. I’m hoping this has been fixed up.
