Adobe Offers Another Beta of Lightroom. “Adobe has released a third public beta of Lightroom, its professional software for photographers.” (Via MacNN.)
I’ve been somewhat keeping up with Lightroom but haven’t really given it the attention it deserves. I’ve finally got around to giving it a closer and really like what Adobe is doing with it. In my opinion, it’s the most Mac-like application Adobe has developed. It feels like it was designed for the Mac yet keeps its own identity or feel to it — instead of completely relying on Apple’s or their own UI precedents.
Here’s a few reasons why I think it’s worthwhile for just about everyone to try Lightroom out:
- It’s intended for people with Digital SLR who already are or may want to start using camera RAW.
- Since Lightroom is a public beta, it’s essentially free for a limited time while Adobe solicits development feedback.
- It actually runs fine on a PowerBook G4. For some reason I didn’t think it would but I was pleasantly surprised to find out it runs just fine on my li’l champ, a 12″ PowerBook.
- Oh, and now with the new beta, it natively runs on Intel-based Macs as well.
So go download a copy of Lightroom beta 2 now and see for yourself.

Macworld is reporting that Adobe is planning on releasing an Intel-ready version of Lightroom. However, Macworld has misinterpreted the remark of Adobe commitment to bring CS to Intel in the future in their article title of “Adobe Lightroom going Intel; CS2 coming”. It’s obvious after reading the article that Adobe is talking about future releases of CS, not the current release of CS2:
Adobe is excited about Apple’s move to the Intel platform. Adobe was one of the first companies that committed to develop software for the new platform, with future versions of Adobe Creative Suite supporting both PowerPC- and Intel-based systems.
[Update: Jim has updated the article's title to "…Creative Suite coming".]

Adobe Lightroom Public Beta: Direct competitor to Aperture, available for download as a free public beta that expires in June (intriguingly, only for Mac — support for Windows is coming later). Don’t miss the video tour of Lightroom’s features and interface.
… Lightroom has been under development at Adobe for about four years, under the code-name Shadowland — many of the engineers previously worked on ImageReady. That the download is available on the macromedia.com site is a side-effect of Adobe using the former ‘Macromedia Labs’ group and moniker as a testing ground for cutting-edge software.
Also noteworthy are the system requirements, which are much less than Aperture’s:
Adobe Lightroom Beta requires Mac OS X version 10.4.3 (Tiger) or higher, a 1GHz or faster PowerPC G4 or G5 processor (including iBook G4 or PowerBook G4), and 768 MB of RAM (although more is recommended), and 1 GB or more of free hard drive space.
