MacBook First Impressions

The new MacBook is great. I happen to be writing this on my new black MacBook that I’ve had for about three weeks now. I opted for the black since it does feel more professional to me. Yes, it’s silly about the $150 premium for black. You’d think Apple could’ve thrown in something else to explain the cost and a better nod towards it being meant for the professional end. But as the Macworld editors have pointed out that this is a similar tactic to what they did with the U2 iPod. It is a price premium but Macworld also think it’s to help manage demand.

The keyboard is different. Not bad or good, just different at this point. I’m still getting accustomed to it. I love the speed and the bigger screen real estate. The glossy screen hasn’t really been an issue for me yet. I was concerned about this as many other people have been.

I’m surprised at just how many applications I have that are already Universal. skEdit just flies on it (not that it wasn’t fast on the PowerBook 12″). Of course that leaves Adobe (and Macromedia) and Word left in non-Universal-land. Which for me, I’m totally fine with using Pages over Word. Photoshop seems fine for the kind of web design work that I do. Launching and switching back and forth between it seems to be the real pain point. But I’m hoping this will be relieved somewhat when we upgrade the RAM (hopefully maxing it out).

I’m been really happy with the MacBook so far. It’s sad somewhat to abandon my trusty PowerBook but this is exactly what I’ve been clamoring for — improved performance and a slightly larger resolution. Yet it still feels quite tote-able though and is very reminiscent of the G3 PowerBooks. Yeah sure I wish it didn’t have an integrated video card, but I’m willing to live with this and not moving up to a 15″ just for its sheer portability. To me, what good is a notebook if you don’t want to carry it around?

Check back for my continued impressions on the MacBook.
