I’m pretty sure this feature popped up in InDesign CS2 with the inclusion of object styles and it’s ability to apply paragraph styles along with the object style. It’s now possible to apply a paragraph style to a selected text frame without having to switch to the Type tool and clicking into the text itself. You can just select it with the Select tool and then click a style in the Paragraph Styles palette to apply it to all the paragraphs found within that frame. That’s a rather nice timesaver to know about.
