Helpful Resources for Version Cue

adobe-driveIf you’re having trouble seeing or connecting to your VersionCue Server, I would first suggest that you make sure you’re running the updates for both Version Cue and Adobe Drive: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=100&platform=Windows

These updates are supposed to fix critical issues with both components. And yes, I’m pretty sure you can’t run both servers at the same time. You should also try migrating your CS3 projects over to your Version Cue CS4 server. Adobe has a help article on this: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Bridge/3.0/WSEAAF9554-6F4B-430b-92C0-AC60A7AE51BC.html

It’s a little tricky but once you get this going, you should be able to run VersionCue CS4 and see you old projects in there. Also, check out this article: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb407015&sliceId=2

Lastly, if none of those suggestions seem to work, I would point you over to the Version Cue Community Support page for more answers: http://www.adobe.com/support/versioncue/

Update Your TextMate Folder Icons for Leopard

textmate-12-14-07As we all wait for MacroMates to announce any new information on the development of TextMate 2.0, I decided I couldn’t take it any longer and had to do something about the outdated folder icons in the Project Drawer. So I took matters into my own hands and crafted up a OS X Leopard folder icon to make my TextMate 1.5 app feel slightly more current and with the times. I did this a couple of months ago but I wanted to share my efforts to those wanting to do the same.

Screen Sharing Madness

OK, so today I had a reason to try Mac OS X Leopard’s Screen Sharing feature with my wife’s MacBook at home. We initiated the Screen Sharing via iChat. Once she started the screen sharing with me, I was able to take over her Mac and do what I needed to do. I then took it up a notch to crazy and screen shared our kid’s iMac G4, running Tiger, to control that Mac. It was partly because I needed to and partly because I wanted to see if I could do it. As you can see from the screenshot below, I was able to create this triple-Dock madness and perform my mad experiment successfully.

Beg, Steal, and Borrow Online Auction Site

greensandnestI’m wanted to let you know of an online auction, called Beg, Steal or Borrow, that the students at The University for the Creative Arts, are holding.

They’ve been getting in contact with notable designers and illustrators, to beg for work, in order for them to auction off. The money made will go towards funding the end of year Graphic Design degree show. The site is now online, featuring the first items for sale. They’re expecting more items, coming from, amongst others; Jonathan Barnbrook, Frost*, James Joyce, Hannah Waldron and Mike Perry.

Macworld posts a profile on Version Cue CS4

adobe-driveNot so much a review but a quick overview of Version Cue CS4. The profile simply runs down what has changed (simpler dialogs) and what hasn’t (management controls). You can read the Version Cue CS4 profile by Galen Gruman here: Profile: Version Cue CS4 | Macworld.

I used to be a proponent for Version Cue but I’ve had nothing but trouble with it since I upgraded to it at our workplace last December. I find I have to reinstall Adobe Drive every couple of weeks to get Version Cue CS4 to behave properly with my Mac.

What’s Next for the iPhone?

iphone-nextA friend of mine recently asked me and a few other friends what we thought was next for the iPhone.

after macworld, a friend of mine asked me why apple didn’t update the iPhone hardware (or software). i told him that it was too soon and that apple was still selling plenty (not at the same rates as before, but plenty) so what would motivate them to hurry?

So here’s what comes to mind when I think about what Apple might do about the iPhone. I think the majority of the enhancements people expect should be next would draw even more on the battery and its current technology. So I would say a better battery is first aspect of the iPhone that would need to be addressed. Who knows, maybe the battery tech they showed in the 17″ MacBook Pro can be brought into the iPhone and would allow for many of the upgrades people expect, but for now I think simple storage space bump is all I’d expect for the immediate future. The Casualties of CS3: GoLive

64px-golive_9_iconHere’s a post I started about the sad end of GoLive now that Macromedia had been absorbed into Adobe. So while cleaning up the blog for the new year I found this old draft lingering around. I thought you all might be interested and could share your thoughts on how you feel about Dreamweaver CS4.

I cut my teeth in web development on GoLive so it was disappointing to me that Dreamweaver and GoLive didn’t come together more holistically. I still feel GoLive’s UI, site management, and drag-drop feature set has always been better than Dreamweaver. Where as Dreamweaver really excelled at responsive code writing and better live preview support. GoLive’s Smart Objects (where the term originated with) was by far more seamless than even the new feature in Dreamweaver CS4 that behaves very similar to Smart Objects. But don’t get me wrong, I used Dreamweaver for about four years before I turned to just using a straight-up code editor. So I know Dreamweaver. But my heart will always go out to GoLive and its cleaner user experience.
